A children’s television series has become ITV’s first sign-presented programme to achieve albert certification for sustainability.

Signpost Productions, the team behind Dare Master @Home on CITV, has been working with BAFTA’s albert team to implement sustainable production techniques to reduce carbon emissions. It’s part of ITV’s commitment to make 100% of the programmes it produces and commissions albert certified by the end of 2021.

Throughout the production process, the team worked to reduce the amount of single use, or new items needed for the shoot by hiring or borrowing props, as well as using recycled materials for the programme content. Where possible, companies local to the filming location were used, reducing transportation needs.

All members of the crew were local to the set in Northumberland which saw the production return to the same site following a successful first series shoot in 2020. The location was powered by solar energy and the owner made small sets from stock materials which were recycled and repurposed as part of their ongoing business operations after filming.

Other carbon reduction initiatives included low energy set lighting; the elimination of single use plastic bottles and there was an opt-in policy for paper scripts, significantly reducing the amount of paper needed on location. Members of the production team also completed albert sustainability training ahead of the location shoot which was made accessible for Deaf crew with BSL interpreters.

Gareth Deighan, Signpost Productions’ creative director said: “I’m incredibly proud of the team for finding new ways to reduce the carbon footprint on Dare Master @Home. Even the smallest changes across all aspects of the production process can really make the biggest difference.”

Dare Master @Home airs from Monday 2nd August on CITV and viewers will see the albert carbon neutral sustainable production logo displayed during the end credits.
